So, what’s happening in Australia in 2018 when it comes to sport? In fact, it’s a sporting calendar that happens every year. So Let’s get a brief rundown on what happens so we can look clever in front of our friends overseas.

– We kicked off the year with The Australian Open Tennis held in Melbourne in January 15th -28th. With total prize money of $55,000,000 Australian dollars shared amongst the winners.

Rugby Union Bledisloe Cup will take place in August with test 1 on the 18th. It’s a strongly contested test match ( Winner of 3 games) between the Wallabies and the All Blacks. New Zealand have had the most success, winning the trophy for the 45th time in 2017, while Australia has won only 12 times. Struth!!

Rugby Leagues State of Origin is another huge sporting event seeing a test match between QLD and NSW. The Maroons, named after the colour of the QLD jersey snatched the series from The Blues NSW in 2017. The 2017 series was the 36th series and QLD has won it 21 times, NSW 13 times and there has been two series drawn. Dates for 2018 have not yet been announced.

The AFL Grand Final will take it’s traditional place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on September the 29th.

– The NRL Grand Final will be held on October 30th.

The Bathurst 1000 takes place on the first week of October which is a 1000km touring car race around Mount Panarama in Bathurst NSW.

The Australian Motorcyle Grand Prix will see the world’s best riders return to Phillip Island on 26-28 October. The world’s best riders will each defy the rules of nature with agility, courage and speed, as they battle it out around the picturesque circuit.

– Also, in October is the Spring Carnival at Melbourne Flemington Racecourse, culminating in the Melbourne Cup. “The race that stops a nation”.

– On the international golfing calendar, we have the Emirates Australian Open from 23rd-26th of November at the Royal Sydney Golf Club. The event began in 1904 and is now one of  Australia’s most prestigious golf championship with a rich, century-old history that draws the world’s best players down under to vie for the Stonehaven Cup.

– At the years end, we have The Ashes, which is a fiercely competitive test cricket match between Australia and England. With the 2017-2018 series winding up on January 8th.

– The end of the year also holds the famous Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.

Cost of living and the Economy. Wage growth is severely stagnated and employment is creeping up. Yikes!

Housing affordability. What happened to the great Australian dream? Labour says to get rid of negative gearing and Liberal says we need more supply.

Climate Change and Energy Policy. This issue is not going away.

  1. Great to know about this site! Some of my very best friends come from Australia which means I can´t meet them personally as much I want. So it is great to know site what it is about what is happening there.

    The Australian Open Tennis starts in Melbourne after a short time. Will it be even stronger than usual?
